"History does not refer merely, or even principally, to the past. On the contrary, the great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, are unconsciously controlled by it in many ways, and history is literally present in all that we do."

                         –James Baldwin

Exploring Our Maps of Privilege and Trauma and Claiming Our Power

As we live, we breathe the air of privilege and trauma. There are moments when I am conscious of breathing, but most of the time it happens automatically. (Please take a moment to be aware of your breath). So it is with “privilege” by which I mean our capacities and resources, be they physical, emotional, spiritual, personal or economic. We often take these as “givens” without even thinking.

A trauma can be strictly personal, something that happened to me. A trauma can also be embedded in groups, nations and in cultures
