It's October and apart from the magnitude of birthdays there are to celebrate, it is officially the beginning of the long holiday season that marks the end of the year. And look, we are almost halfway there. So we have to hurry, hurry hurry so that we can get all the celebrations in. The Saturday Morning Entertainment Show is here to share and enjoy all the celebrations with its fans. This is usually the week of Miami's Carnival celebrations but Florida has been hit by two major storms within the space of a week. It is left for us to wonder whether the Carnival celebrations have been halted. Despite our insistence on encouraging people to celebrate, disasters do happen, both natural and manmade. And that is why we take time out to have a conversation. So Let's Talk.
Traditionally, today, October 12, has been celebrated as Columbus Day to commemorate the first arrival of the Europeans in the Caribbean. The events which followed were nothing short of catastrophic and included the extermination of many of the indigenous peoples of the region. Therefore, many people take offense to this celebration of Europeans and have therefore call today Indigenous People's Day to memorialize the indigenous people who suffered the great disasters at the hands of Columbus and the Europeans who followed. Should the arrival of the Europeans be something that should be celebrated as some joyous occasion? Would the failure to celebrate this event discredit its importance to world history? Would celebrating it desecrate the life of the indigenous people? Come on in. Join the conversation or tell us what you want to talk about. We are always happy to hear from you.
