"Her literal sass jumps off the page revealing that which black folks speak among themselves only."

Lucy Thornton Berry is a retired librarian and educator, who now spends her time in pursuit of her two passions, writing poetry and researching African American history.

Author of the book FROM SURVIVIN' TO THRIVIN' and several broadsides, she has been published in a number of anthologies and magazines, among which are: BLACK GOLD; ADAM OF IFE: BLACK WOMEN IN PRAISE OF BLACK MEN; JUBILEE MAGAZINE;  URBAN PROFILE MAGAZINE;  THE ZORA NEALE HURSTON FORUM.

Among the many accolades her poetry has received:

  • "Her literal sass jumps off the page revealing that which black folks speak among themselves only."

  • "Lucy Thornton Berry's homey, shoot from the hip style is delightful, enjoyable and thigh-slapping fun."

  • "Lucy is as sassy as Sarah, lucid as Zora, with the profundity of Killens."

  • "You have such a strong voice, full of those gentle comforts that remind us of Black reunions and Black people and times we haven't thought about in years."

  • Lucy is a PROUD graduate of Livingstone College.
