Belle Butler is a singer-songwriter from the Blue Mountains NSW, Australia. Her indie-folk-pop songs are raw and real. Belle spent much of the twenty-teens playing Sydney gigs and writing songs, but ultimately intimidated by big egos in a male-dominated music industry she took a step back. Her new single ‘I Am She’ marks a personal shift and reflects a nation-wide cultural shift - the refusal of women to continue to stay silent. ‘I Am She’ is Belle’s response to her own and witnessed experiences of misogyny and gender-based discrimination, violence and abuse. ‘I Am She’, which was produced and mixed by Anna Laverty, is equally devastating and empowering and echoes the frustration, anger, sadness and strength of women currently demanding respect and change. The song is one part of a larger project - Project I Am She - a photo-narrative containing portraits of women and their personal stories of misogyny and gender-based abuse. The project aims to highlight the everyday/every-women nature of the problem and to give women a platform to speak up about their experiences.
