Dr. Joyce Ogunrinde is a scholar activist employing her platform at the University of Houston to uncover the ways people and communities engage in sport and increase sport’s utility to these communities.  As a McNair Scholar, her first research project focused on the coping strategies of freshman student- athletes. While completing her master’s in Sport and Recreation at Temple University, she worked with the Black Women in Sport Foundation transforming youth through innovative sport and physical activity. This experience led her to complete her PhD in Kinesiology- Sport Management. From there, she served as Assistant Professor at Arkansas State guiding the next generation of sport managers to see sport differently by seeing themselves more clearly. The focus of her research is to understand the cultural meanings associated with sport for African-American communities and to redefine those meanings to create sport programs that can be leveraged to redress health, social, and economic disparities. In particular, Dr. Joyce aims to identify the psychosocial effects of sport participation on the long-term personal growth and development of adolescents in these communities. She also aims to determine the key practical implications for creating sustainable sport for development programs within marginalized communities that redress the various disparities facing African-American communities. In this way, Dr. Joyce seeks to assist in redefining sport, and consequently, its utility in our society.
