A Chat in the Garden with Monique A. J. Smith

Mackenzie Rector attended University of Tampa and earned a B.A. in public relations and a B.S. in sport management.

After working with sports organizations such as Tampa Bay Lightning, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, The Outback Bowl, and the NCAA Women's Final Four; Mackenzie accepted a full-time role with United Soccer League as their first Broadcast Coordinator.

While Mackenzie loved working as a sport practioner, she was unsatisfied with her and other women of color's experience as sport professionals, often existing as the only woman of color in the organization. To contribute to a more equitable sport industry, she  decided to go back to school.

She enrolled in Georgia State University and earned her M.S. in Sport Management. While at GSU, she was a graduate assistant for Civic Engagement in University Housing and worked for the Atlanta Basketball Host Committee as the Grassroots Marketing and Projects Assistant.

Mackenzie continued her studies at Ohio State University, where she is working towards her Ph.D. in Sport Management. Her research interests are at the intersection of sport management education and social justice education. Her current research study explores the experiences of black women sport management students.
