EMPHASIZING GOODNESS WHILE NEGLECTING TRUTH AND BEAUTY.  A Divine Counselor regrets that religion has pursued the unwise course of "emphasizing the goodness of God to the relative exclusion of truth and neglect of beauty," thereby causing many human beings to turn away from abstract and isolated goodness. He calls for religion to give "equal consideration to the truths of science, philosophy, and spiritual experience, and to the beauties of the physical creation, the charm of intellectual art, and the grandeur of genuine character achievement." Further, the Divine Counselor challenges men and women of spiritual insight ”to construct a new and appealing philosophy of living out of the enlarged and exquisitely integrated modern concepts of cosmic truth, universe beauty, and divine goodness" [a Divine Counselor, 43:2-3 / 2:7.9-10].

After participants have grappled with these complex concepts, endeavoring to explain how humanity can act upon them, they will begin discussing Jesus’ discourse on true religion (section 5 in Paper 155) — a text that the Midwayer Commission describes as "one of the most remarkable addresses that his apostles ever listened to throughout all their years of association with him" [the Midwayer Commission, 1728:2 / 155:4.2].
