It’s Been a Good Day
The Rev. Charles Hayes founded the Cosmopolitan Church of Prayer on Chicago's South Side as well as the church's famous choir, The Mighty Warriors, whose gospel performances live and on dozens of recordings were as much a part of his ministry as his preaching.
"Dr. Hayes believed in traditional gospel all of his life, and we've stayed a traditional gospel choir all these years," said LeRoy Patten, who has been a lead singer with the choir for 27 years.
"He always declared that traditional gospel music is substance," Patten said. "You could always reach back to hear 'Amazing Grace' or 'Precious Lord' while going through adversity and it'll help you get through."
The Rev. Hayes, 76, who had been ill for some time, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, in ManorCare Health Services in Oak Lawn, according to friend and church staff member Charisse Wilson. He lived for many years in the Woodlawn neighborhood.
