Free trade is a trade policy that does not restrict imports or exports; it is the idea of the free market as applied to international trade. During the second half of the twentieth century there was a shift in US economic policy to maximize cheap labor and maximum profits. The US led a worldwide campagin for free trade. It sounds great and many bought into it but we will discover that this deeply distorted most of the Latin American economies.
