Eric Clapton was the first three time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when he was honored as a member of the Yardbirds in 1992, then with Cream in 1993, and finally as a solo artist in 2000. As a young performer, he described himself as “an English kid playing the blues being just wrong” and possibly explaining why it was not popular in some respects. But a few years later, he earned the nickname “Slowhand” and inspired the scrawling of “Clapton Is God” graffiti around London. With inspirations ranging from reggae to country to rhythm and blues, his loyalty has not been to a single style, but the integrity of the music. Despite the bouts with drug and alcohol addiction, Clapton is not only a survivor, but an artist who has maintained his stature as rock’s preeminent guitarist.
