3. as the serpent beguiled Eve] The Church, as a second Eve, is espoused to Christ, the new Adam (1Co_15:45). She must beware lest, like Eve, she listen to the voice of the same tempter, who ever lieth in wait to deceive, and so lose the privileges she was destined to enjoy. See ch. 2Co_2:11.
