Most people are shocked to discover the infamous ONE-DROP RULE that asserted any person with even one ancestor of sub-Saharan African ancestry ("one drop" of black blood) is considered BLACK didn't actually go into effect until the 20th Century in America. PRESIDENT THOMAS JEFFERSON fathered at least six children who were enslaved due to their MIX RACE. Two of them died before adulthood, two were allowed to escape, and two remained ENSLAVED until he freed them in his will. Ironically, all of their descendants identified as WHITE. Fortunately BIRACIAL children are no longer faced with being enslaved or not in this country, but what is their experience growing up? How do they identify if they are BLACK or WHITE?
