The month of October is National Domestic Violence awareness month. Domestic Violence does not discriminate. Anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion or gender can be a victim or perpetrator of domestic violence. It can happen to people who are married, living together or who are dating. It affects people of all socioeconomic background and education levels. Individuals can also be of the same sex or related by blood or marriage.
Domestic violence includes behaviors that physically harm, arouse fear, prevent an individual from doing what they wish or force one to behave in ways that one do not want. Types of abuse includes physical, sexual, verbal, financial, spiritual and emotional. There is also an imbalance of power and control.
Domestic violence also effect children that witness such in the home. There are warning signs yet they are often ignored. And many stay in abusive relationships for a number of reasons.
