This special edition of the Deep Dive is an interview with filmmaker Chris Bournea, creator of “Lady Wrestler: The Amazing Untold Story of African-American Women in the Ring." We talk about Chris’s experience filming the movie, the experiences of the women in the documentary – including wrestling in “sun down” towns, wrestling promoters in Japan intimidating one of the women, and the strength and resilience being a trailblazer in wrestling prior to the Civil Rights movement catching fire in the United States. We also talk about the influence these women had on the ability of today’s women of color to have a voice - so join me as I dive with Chris into these “hidden figures” in wrestling history. We close chatting about Chris’s other works, namely his novel “The Chloe Chronicles” – which he started during his childhood, and his non-fiction work “All Jokes Aside” with his collaborator Raymond Lambert, and break down how long the road was to create "Lady Wrestler.?"
