Next Monday will mark the sixteenth anniversary of 9/11. The horrific terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon, and the crash of Flight 93 claimed the lives of almost 3,000 people and wounded 6,000 others. These numbers don’t address the thousands who suffered the loss of parents, siblings, children, friends, and co-workers. This devastating event changed the American way of life and impacted the entire world forever.
My guest today, Chaplain Bob Ossler, responded immediately to the call for chaplain volunteers to Ground Zero and was on site on September 13th. Bob reported to Ground Zero well equipped for the job at hand, bringing with him experience as a fireman, paramedic, licensed funeral director and embalmer, pathologist assistant, and an ordained chaplain. He spent forty days on what was known as the pile, the perimeter, and at St Paul’s Chapel, ministering to victims’ families, firefighters, police officers, and other volunteers.
In his book, Triumph Over Terror, published in 2016, Bob shares his experiences, providing a firsthand account of what transpired at Ground Zero in the days immediately following the terrorist attacks.
