“Sometimes it’s only a test” Job 1:1-12
If we l look at our title tonight “Sometimes it’s only a test”, we have to visit what testing is all about. With everything that is going on in our lives today we may be wondering is this a form of testing from God and if so, we might ask why God test us or allows us to be tested. In both the Old and New Testaments, the words translated “test” mean “to prove by trial and temptations.” Therefore, when God test His children, His purpose is to prove that our faith is real. Not that God needs to prove it to Himself since He knows all things, but He is proving to us that our faith is real, that we are truly His children, and that no trial will overcome our faith.
We live in a world of pain and suffering. There is no one who is not affected by the harsh realities of life, and you might be asking the question “why do bad things happen to good people?” It is one of the most difficult questions in all of theology. Then you must ask the question who is good. We must remember that there are no “good” people, in the absolute sense of the word. All of us are tainted by and infected with sin. We all fall short of God’s glory. As Jesus said, “No one is good—except God alone”. We live in a fallen world, and we experience the effects of the fall. The sin that happened back then is still collecting it consequences, we are forgiven by the blood of Jesus, but the consequences of those sins must be paid. One of those effects is injustice and seemingly senseless suffering.
