Keith Frohreich: Blackberries Are Red When Green

The late 1950s and early 1960s were time of slow racial change, and in the Midwest, the slow arch of change was felt very strongly by Keith Frohreich, who witnessed it as a boy growing up alongside the Eel river. 

It was a time and place that some have forgotten, but certainly not Keith who has written a masterful and deeply moving Midwest Gothic novel, Blackberries Are Red When Green, that is part historical fiction, part coming-of-age tale, part murder-mystery. We learn about America’s first Black Middle Class, the Pullman Porters, and the most northern lynching in U.S. history, woven together with a rich, funny and moving family drama.
