When I first realized I needed to learn exactly how the Federal Reserve, central banks and "fractional reserve banking" actually worked, I did a lot of research and reading. Almost all the historical and analytical references I found led back to the preeminent work on this subject by G. Edward Griffin, called The Creature from Jekyll Island. Most people seem to think that banks actually have money that they lend out to generate a return, but the amazing truth is that banks are allowed to lend money they do not have. The term "fractional reserve banking" suggests that maybe banks take your deposit and then lend out part of it to make money, and keep the rest in their possession in case some of their customers want to withdraw money. This would make some sense, but that's not really how it works. In actual practice, the bank takes in your deposit, and it is then allowed to lend out several times that amount, in other words, money it doesn't have. Twilight Zone looks normal by comparison. It is the basis for the massive power that banks have over governments and all aspects of our lives. But that's only the tip of the iceberg. G. Edward Griffin will join us with the rest of the story.
