Freemasonry may well be the mindset that draws attention to hidden potency. To enrich the mind, we need to look up at sacred geometry, at the depths and heights of understanding. Is it wrong to think that Freemasonry exposes the world to process; means to an end? To avoid driving ourselves into a Calvinist frenzy, the genius of masonry responded with conviviality. It makes better sense to wonder if there is truth in the notion that it is the "language and philosophy of symbolism, or the esoteric and the esoteric garb of Truth". Something in that startles and intrigues. I buy the kit with a lofty goal in mind. One day I'll be a star. And then the challenge becomes apparent; the state of mind that focuses and pushes back on what experience and doubt have 'proven'. Distraction or diligence? Most often what we consider genius is the result of hard work. Constant refinement. Day by day, improving slightly and having the wherewithall to notice. Like you, I'm inclined to think of lodges were packaged with this in mind, it would winnow out the crowd. I was sitting one day in the Art Gallery of Scotland. Initimate and expansive. A wonder to the senses. And I noticed the people coming through the doors were dressed according to their station in life, but in earnest- purposeful. Not staring but absorbing. Lost in the shared experience of beautiful minds and it occurred that this might be what we mean when we talk about hidden potency, hidden potential- making a good man better. Should it be daunting? Probably. Yes. Of course. In our secular environment are we built to stand firm when faced with this nebulous challenge? We are built to be fed ideas and experiences that satisfy groupthink. Meanwhile the genius in us, retreats to the shadows- to contemplate. There is purpose to freemasonry. We are probably better off pretending it doesn't exist if we aren't ready for truth.
