What Leaders Can Do to Create an Inclusive LGBTQ+ Workplace
in Education
Named America’s go-to Leading LGBT+ Expert by The New York Times, ABC News, Yahoo!, and CNN, Dr. Kryss Shane LSW, LMSW (she/her) joins us for an important conversation on how leaders engage in their organizations to build an inclusive LGBT+ workplace. Dr. Kryss serves as the Director of the Social Work Program and Assistant Professor at Thomas University, as well as being a Lecturer at Columbia University and an Adjunct Professor at Fordham University, National Louis University, and National University. With over 25 years experience, Dr. Kryss is known for helping businesses address their unique Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion needs in an approachable, manageable and actionable way. In addition to her doctorate, she holds two master’s degrees, and two licenses to practice mental healthcare. Also a successful author, she has written, Creating an LGBT+ Inclusive University: A Practical Resource Guide for Faculty and Administrators, which provides guidance for faculty and administrators of universities and colleges to become knowledgeable, capable, and able to make their campuses (including online campuses) more LGBT+ inclusive. She is also the author of Creating an LGBT+ Inclusive Workplace: The Practical Resource Guide for Business Leaders, which provides best practices and professional guidance for creating LGBT+ inclusive workplaces. Her writings have also appeared in the Journal of Nonprofit Education and Leadership, Huffington Post, International Council of Professors of Educational Leadership, The New Social Worker Magazine, and many more. A Chat in the Garden with Monique A. J. Smith
Danielle Brown is in her second year with HD Intelligence, serving as the company’s Director of Women’s Basketball and member of HDI’s Leadership Team. She came to HDI in 2022 after coaching women’s basketball for 10 years. Most recently, she spent the 2020-2022 seasons as an assistant and interim head coach with University of Illinois - Chicago. Prior UIC, she served as an assistant coach for two seasons at Yale University. Previous to her stint at Yale, Danielle spent the 2017-18 season on staff at Rutgers-Newark.
Danielle started her coaching career as head coach at Rahway High School in New Jersey from 2011-17, where she led the Indians to six straight State Tournament appearances, a conference title, and their deepest postseason run since 2001. She also taught Health and Physical Education from 2011-2018 and was awarded the 2016 Educator’s Award.
As a forward at Kean University, she helped the nationally ranked Cougars to four NCAA DIII Tournament appearances and three Elite Eight appearances, accumulating a 106-18 record over the course of her career.
A native of New Brunswick, N.J., Brown graduated cum laude from Kean in 2010 with a degree in health/physical education and earned her master’s degree in educational instructional leadership from the University of Illinois - Chicago in 2022.

Another Fork in the Road - Behavioral Problems After Brain Injury

Brain Injury causes a variety of problems and poses many challenges for survivors, but changes in a survivor's behavior or personality can present huge difficulties for, not only the survivor, but also for his or her family and friends. Three survivors join me tonight to talk about the impact of behavioral changes on their lives. I hope you will tune in.
Every TBI survivor and caregiver has encountered a fork in the road that has diverted his or her life-plan. A car accident, a fall from the roof, doing one more chin-up, or a door literally slamming one in the face are just some causes of traumatic brain injury. College plans, walking down the aisle in the perfect dress, or the coveted job quickly slip from reality as dreams turn to struggle. These unexpected life-happenings that divert one from his or her chosen path in life can be devastating. But as Yogi Berra once said, "If you come to a fork in the road, take it." https://boldandbrightacademy.com Born and raised on the East Coast, Bethany Johnson earned a BFA in Dance and spent a decade teaching dance while performing professionally. Her journey took a significant turn when she relocated to Las Vegas, transitioning from dance to elementary education. This shift was driven by a desire to impact young lives through education. However, the reality of the classroom revealed systemic flaws—outdated curriculums and teaching methods that she felt were stifling children’s natural curiosity and self-esteem. In pursuit of this vision, she founded Bold and Bright Academy, a preschool operated from her garage, tailored for 3-5-year-olds. This initiative was grounded in a play-based, developmentally appropriate approach, allowing her to make a meaningful difference in her students’ early educational experiences. Her commitment to expanding her impact while maintaining personalized learning environments led to the launch of Bold and Bright Academy Online. This platform offers hundreds of on-demand classes for 2-6-year-olds, taught by a team of 16 educators. It includes interactive resources such as printable curriculum, educational games, parent support, and live socialization opportunities through Zoom classes. Her innovative approach to early childhood education was recognized when she received Nevada’s 2023 Early Childhood Educator of the Year award and was nominated for America’s Favorite Teacher. Her recent participation as a contestant on “The Blox,” a major reality show for entrepreneurs, highlights her ongoing commitment to redefining educational paradigms. Her teaching philosophy centers on the belief that all children can learn with the right tools, accommodations, and support, fostering a classroom environment where resilience and kindness are key values.

Albany, NY - What exactly do diversity, equity, and inclusion mean? According to Professor Tamu Chambers of Hudson Valley Community College, “Diversity, equity, and inclusion translate to a better understanding of each other. When someone lives differently than you, talks differently, walks differently, loves differently, believes in God differently, that just means that person has something to give. When we understand that everyone has something to offer, we are more able to respect our differences. We are all special. Understanding and respect are the keys.”
As a UNITE leader, Professor Chambers is working to teach students from different cultures that they’re often not all that different.
When some people hear about DEI, they’re concerned someone wants to take away their traditions. “Too many think one group wants to take over—that is not the case. Everyone wants to have opportunities, to participate, and that’s what DEI provides. DEI is not about someone coming along taking anything away. This is why education is so important,” shares Dr. Chambers.
At Hudson Valley Community College, Professor Chambers is happily celebrating as many traditions as possible. “Every month we have something to celebrate, from St. Patrick’s Day to Black History and Women’s History. I love to dress up, so for me, DEI is a wonderful opportunity to try out new outfits, for example, a jahab for Muslim students. And how much fun is mehndi! All cultures have special days and they’re all fun. If people are willing to at least try new ideas and celebrations, confusion and fear just melt away.”
