Late Night... Another late night and my thoughts wander drawing from my memories strong emotions, needing to be expressed My pen almost burning in my hand as I hold it firmly, trying to begin My thoughts jumbled together the only common thread is the emotion Suddenly, my pen glides on paper sentences appear, first one then another. Verse after verse, each yearning to be heard and understood Seeking refuge in the quiet of the late night These confessions calm my soul ~ Jean ~ The Curtain Opens ... The Stage is lit...C'mon ... Counting the Dead: Estimating the Loss of Life in the Indigenous Holocaust, 1492-Present David Michael Smith University of Houston-Downtown During the past century, researchers have learned a great deal about the nature and scope of what Russell Thornton has called the demographic collapse of the Indigenous population in the Western Hemisphere after 1492.1 As David Stannard has explained, the almost inconceivable number of deaths caused by the invasion and conquest of these lands by
By the end of 1945, the bombing had killed an estimated 140,000 people in Hiroshima, and a further 74,000 in Nagasaki.
The American Indians were the “new Canaanites” in America’s “Promised Land.” The fruit of Puritan theology was brutal. They saw their mission as convert these “Canaanites” to Christianity; failing that, it was acceptable to slaughter them in the name of Christ. For example, the Puritan massacres of the Pequot Indian tribe on May 26, 1637, and again on July 14, 1637, were deemed by the Puritans to be directed by God — Captain John Mason declared, “God laughed his Enemies and the Enemies of his People to Scorn, making them as a fiery Oven … Thus did the Lord judge among the Heathen, filling the Place with dead Bodies” (Segal and Stinenback, Puritans, Indians, and Manifest Destiny, pp. 111-112, 134-135). Converting the pagans for God was acceptable to the Puritans, but killing the pagans for the Lord was also acceptable!

Exploring Ekphrasis' with Captain B2 & Greyeyes Smith
in Poetry
Welcome to the LNP Program, "Exploring Ekphrasis" hosted by Captain B2 & Greyeyes Smith An ekphrastic work is a vivid, often dramatic, verbal description of a visual work of art, either real or imagined. In this way, a painting may represent a sculpture, and vice versa; a poem portray a picture; a sculpture depict a heroine of a novel; in fact, given the right circumstances, any art may describe any other art, especially if a rhetorical element, standing for the sentiments of the artist when they created their work, is present. According to the Poetry Foundation, "an ekphrastic poem is a vivid description of a scene or, more commonly, a work of art." The word ekphrasis comes from the Greek for the written description of a work of art produced as a rhetorical exercise often used in the adjectival form ekphrastic. Every other Saturday, we will be sharing ekphrastic poetry inspired by the artwork prompts from each of our program related contests, and we invite you to call in and read your work.
